(Scene: Space Colony Side 6, December, UC 0109. YOU and your DAUGHTER walk past the woods where you first met Bernie.)
You: (looking up at the spot, your voice distant) It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?
Christy: What’s here, Daddy?
You: This is where I first met Uncle Bernie.
Christy: Bernie?
You: Yes, just like your brother’s name.
Christy: Who is Uncle Bernie?
You: Uncle Bernie was a soldier, but… he wasn’t like the others. He came here to stop a Gundam, but in the end, he wanted to save everyone. He was the kindest person I ever knew.
Christy: But… wasn’t he the bad guy?
You: He was on the other side, yes. But he didn’t want to hurt anyone. He ended up trying to save everyone, even though it would cost him his life. If he were here today, he’d probably be in his 50s. And he’d get you the biggest Christmas present.
(Your expression grows sadder as you look in the direction where the final battle took place.)
You: I miss him, kiddo. He was a real hero. Not like the heroes they talk about in stories. He fought because he thought it was the right thing to do, not because he had to.
Christy: Did he die here, Daddy?
You: Right there. He was trying to protect the people in this colony, even though he didn’t know them.
(You kneel and place a flower at the spot where the Zaku had fallen from above.)
You: Merry Christmas, Bernie. I hope you’re in a better place now.
(Your Daughter picks a white flower and gently places it next to yours.)
Christy: Merry Christmas, Uncle Bernie.
(You lift your Daughter onto your shoulder, smiling softly.)
You: Let’s go, kiddo. Your mom and Bernie are waiting for us at the restaurant.
(You laugh and walk off together, the path echoing with your happy voices as you head to the restaurant.)
