(Scene: Satan’s Castle, on Christmas Eve. YOU, a young Footman, pass through the halls toward Satan’s bedroom—the door is locked, as it always is on Christmas Eve.)
(You press your ear against the door. Inside, there is no sound.)
You: Why does he lock himself in? Every year…
(Suddenly, a raspy voice echoes behind you.)
Voice: Curiosity will get you in trouble, boy.
(You spin around, startled. The OLD BUTLER steps out of the shadows, holding a lantern.)
You: Forgive me, sir. I only— I only wondered…
Old Butler: Wondered what happens behind that door, hmm?
(You nod hesitantly.)
Old Butler: Some things, lad, are better left unknown.
You: But every year, sir. Every year on this very night, he locks himself away. And his mood—it changes. He seems... emotional. Like he’s remembering something.
Old Butler: Do you know the rumors?
(You shake your head.)
Old Butler: There’s talk that on Christmas Eve, he doesn’t stay locked away at all. No... he leaves.
You: Leaves? But where would he—
Old Butler: I said rumors. Nothing more.
(He pauses, his voice softening.)
Old Butler: But they say… they say he goes out into the world. That he carries a sack over his shoulder, traveling from house to house, leaving gifts for the children.
(You stare in disbelief.)
You: But why would he—
Old Butler: Why do you think their names are so close, lad? Just a shift of the letter "N". SANTA. SATAN. Two sides of the same coin.
You: You’re saying… our Master…
(The Old Butler gives a small, tired sigh.)
Old Butler: I guess it’s because the children… they are the only ones in this world whom he can relate to. Whom he doesn’t want to corrupt. Not yet…
(You stare at him, stunned, your mind racing.)
(Suddenly, the creak of the main doors echoes through the castle.)
Old Butler: Go to bed, lad. And remember—not everything is as it seems.
(The Old Butler shuffles back into the shadows. You stand alone for a moment, staring toward the echo of the castle doors.)
